The IHW2006 organizing committee will do all that is possible to support the travel, housing and registration costs for students and postdoctoral trainees attending the meeting. Choices will be made in consultation with the session chairs who will compile lists of those who presented the better talks and, as well, the top-ranked posters. Those students and postdocs chosen for these awards will be alerted by email after the meeting and asked to submit receipts that total the full amount of the award. It is necessary to consider these as reimbursements for travel and expenses rather than honoraria in order to avoid taxes. We anticipate that these awards will be in the area of $500 US. Also note that checks will be mailed to the trainee’s supervisor based on the assumption that the travel was supported by research grants to the supervisor.
There are presently three sources for these travel awards:
1. Funds granted the organization by the US National Institutes of Health (from NCI and NIAID) that can only be used to support trainees working in US laboratories and who have a Social Security Number.
2. Funds were made available to IHW2006 by the organizers of IHW2005 to support trainees from laboratories outside the US.
3. There may be funds available from revenue generated at IHW2006 to support trainees from all countries. The extent of this support will depend on the success of fund raising, attendance at the meeting, and expenses.
Please indicate on the registration form if you wish to apply for a trainee travel award, whether you are a PhD student or postdoctoral fellow, and whether you are working in a US lab and have a social security number.
