Dr. Phil Pellett Co-chair

Dr. Pellett has led a diverse range of scientific projects and programs, including large-scale epidemiology studies, studies of virus genome structure and genetic content, diagnostic assay development, virus immunobiology, and molecular aspects of the cell-virus interaction. His scientific community service includes prior service as an Editor of Archives of Virology (the first international virology journal), active service on editorial boards of four journals, serving as Chair of the Herpesvirales Study Group of the International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses, contribution of chapters to multiple editions of high-end reference books, and activity as a member of the scientific boards of foundations that are involved in enhancing public awareness and supporting research related to human herpesvirus infections. He has been a regular participant at International Herpesvirus Workshops since 1987, including numerous presentations from my laboratory, chairing sessions, and serving on the International Scientific Committee. He has been involved in organization of other meetings, including convening, organizing, and chairing the first of what became a series of satellite sessions on human herpesvirus 6 at Interernational Herpesvirus Workshops beginning in 1988. He conceived and organized the first International Conference on Human Herpesviruses 6 and 7, and has continued to have organizing roles in the conference, the 8th edition of which will be held in Paris in April 2013, with an expected attendance of 200. Much of his current activity is focused on studies of the structure and biogenesis of the human cytomegalovirus cytoplasmic virion assembly complex.

Dr. Steven J. Triezenberg

Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

Steve Triezenberg has been exploring mechanisms of transcriptional regulation in eukaryotes for nearly 30 years, most often by studying the VP16 protein of herpes simplex virus. Born near Chicago, Steve moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan as a boy and stayed there through his undergraduate training in biology and education at Calvin College. He went to the University of Michigan for his PhD in cell and molecular biology, working on polyomavirus DNA replication with Dr. Bill Folk. He then joined the laboratory of Dr. Steve McKnight for his postdoctoral research at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, where he began his work with HSV and VP16. Dr. Triezenberg was a faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University for more than 18 years before joining the Van Andel Institute (and returning to Grand Rapids) in 2006. He is the founding dean of the Van Andel Institute Graduate School. The Van Andel Education Institute also offers science opportunities for students in grade school through high school and provides professional development for science teachers.
